  • ¾ cup olive oil
  • ¾ cup blood orange juice
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ¼ cups unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • Zest from 5 blood oranges
  • ½ cup dark chocolate
  • 1 ½ cups (300g) granulated sugar
  • 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
  • 3/4 cup (177mL) blood orange juice (about 4 large oranges – reserve the zest for frosting)
  • 3/4 cup (60g) unsweetened cocoa powder (spooned and leveled)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 ¼ cup (296mL) water
  • Zest from 3 blood oranges
  • 6 cups (720g) powdered sugar (spooned and leveled)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup (59mL) blood orange juice
  • 1/2 cup (3oz) dark chocolate
  • 1/2 cup (118mL) half and half (or 1/4 cup cream with 1/4 cup milk)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, combine water, sugar, olive oil, blood orange juice, and zest until blended.
  3. In another bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking soda.
  4. Gradually mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients; stir gently.
  5. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for about 25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool cakes before frosting with blood orange buttercream and drizzling with dark chocolate ganache.
